Vestfonna ice cap, northeastern Svalbard, is one of the largest ice bodies in the European Arctic, but little is known about the evolution of its mass balance. This study presents a reconstruction of the climatic mass balance of the ice cap for the period 1979/80-2010/11.

Climatic mass balance of the ice cap Vestfonna, Svalbard: A spatially distributed assessment Journal of Geophysical Research: Earth Surface 116 (F3), 2011.
A spatial comparison of snow water equivalents above the previous end‐of‐summer surface serves for obtaining insights into the spatial distribution of snow accumulation across Vestfonna. Altitude was found to be the only significant spatial parameter for controlling snow accumulation across the ice cap. However, for the ice cap Vestfonna, in northeastern Svalbard, climatic mass balance modelling has suggested almost balanced conditions over a period of nine years (2000–2009).
A slightly positive geodetic mass balance (1990–2005) has been reported from a comparison of laser altimetry to older DEMs.
Fieldwork. [5] Between May and June 1995, an electromechanical drill ( Figure 1) was used to obtain an ice core from the top of Vestfonna Ice Cap in Nordaustlandet, Svalbard (79°58′N, 21°01′E, 600‐m a.s.l.). The drilling stopped at the 211‐m depth. Figure 1.
